Abu Dhabi Launches the First Dedicated Plates for Self-Driving Cars

Abu Dhabi has introduced the first dedicated licence plates for autonomous vehicles, making self-driving cars instantly identifiable on the emirate’s roads. The plates use a unified blue design and carry one of two labels: Auto Drive for vehicles providing commercial autonomous services, and Test for vehicles operating in trial or pilot programmes.

The initiative was launched by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council. It follows the opening of a central control room on 10 July 2026 that manages and monitors autonomous vehicle operations across the emirate.

A fast-moving regulatory picture

The plate launch is one step in a broader push. Dubai adopted executive regulations under Law No. 9 of 2023 in December 2025, defining six categories of autonomous vehicle and requirements for licensing, technical inspection and secure software updates. Ras Al Khaimah followed in January 2026 with Law No. 1 of 2026, designating RAKTA as the regulator.

For drivers, the takeaway is that new plate types are arriving alongside digital registration tools and changing ownership rules. Knowing how plates are classified and regulated matters more than ever when buying, selling or evaluating a number.
